Chapter 9

“Beautiful country and so different from Nebraska and Arizona,” Tabitha said, as they ate an afternoon picnic by the clear blue water of Lake Superior.

“It is chilly here.” Sara pulled her sweater around her as the wind picked up.

“The boats in the marina are bobbing on the waves. I wouldn’t want to be out sailing.” Sam looked at the men placing shovels and tarps in the sailboats.

“Those are the first guests we’ve seen. Does one of them have a black pirate’s patch on his eye?” Tabitha asked.

“I think it is just a plain eye patch. We can’t allow our imagination to run away with us,” Sara said, as she pulled the sweater tighter. There was a chill, and not just from the wind, running down her spine making her jumpy.

“Well look at the other guy,” Sam pointed out, “he’s got a peg leg and black hat with a peacock feather. Looks like a Halloween costume, but I believe it’s real.”

Men dressed in breeches, knitted caps, waistcoats, white silk stockings, linen shirts open to the waist and shoes with bright brass buckles started lining up along the beach.

The captain looked elegant in silk, damask, and velvet. His large black hat was adorned with tall feathers that waved in the wind. He stood on the shore, hands on hips, directing the loading of each sailboat. When all the boats were loaded, the elegantly dressed captain sailed away in the largest, most luxurious ship of the small fleet.

“This is going to make a good story for your children’s books, right Sara?” Tabitha asked, taking a big bite of her beef pasty.

“I’m making notes and might even do a little writing this evening after supper.” Sara nodded.

“I won’t be having supper with you tonight. Bill Bailey is catering a meal for us in my room. Not to be impolite, but I’ll be closing the connecting door.” Tabitha beamed.

“Be careful.” Sam started packing up the picnic basket.

“Tell us what you know about your relatives.” Sara looked at her aunt.

“I may have exaggerated about the relatives,” Tabitha said, pulling apart a paper napkin.

“Let’s hear the whole story. Better we talk here than in our rooms.” Sam sat down across from Tabitha and leaned his elbows on the table.

“Jerry’s great-aunt Millie was a friend of my great-aunt Gertrude. It was Gertrude who is the direct descendant of the pirate captain. For a school report Gertrude told the story of the shipwreck on Lake Superior and pirates who buried treasure somewhere in a small cave. Somehow that story landed in the Kornville newspaper and it’s haunted our family ever since.”

“I remember my dad telling me how one night he saw men with shovels digging out in the corn field. They said they were looking for a pirate’s map.” Sara looked out over the lake as dark storm clouds rolled in from the west and the waters got choppy.

“Yes, that happened off and on for years. When no map was found, the treasure hunters finally gave up. Jerry’s obsessed with pirates, shipwrecks, and buried treasure.
